It’s Time for a Cleanup: OpenAI’s Chatbot Store Under Attack by Spam

Cleanup is urgently needed in OpenAI’s chatbot store as it is currently under attack by spam. The GPT Store, which was introduced at the company’s developer conference by CEO Sam Altman, is now flooded with questionable and potentially infringing GPTs.

The marketplace is filled with GPTs that claim to generate art in the style of popular properties like Disney and Marvel. Some GPTs even advertise the ability to bypass AI content detection tools, raising concerns about the moderation efforts implemented by OpenAI.

To list GPTs on the store, developers must go through a verification process and submit their creations for review by OpenAI’s team. However, the rapid growth of the GPT Store, with approximately 3 million GPTs available, has led to a decline in quality and adherence to OpenAI’s policies.

One major issue plaguing the store is the presence of GPTs that infringe on copyright, featuring content from well-known movies, TV shows, and video games without proper authorization. Additionally, there are GPTs promoting academic dishonesty by claiming to bypass plagiarism detectors.

Furthermore, some GPTs in the store impersonate public figures or offer misleading services, raising concerns about legal liabilities for both OpenAI and the developers behind these GPTs. Attempts to jailbreak OpenAI’s models are also present in the marketplace, albeit with limited success.

As OpenAI plans to allow GPT developers to monetize their creations based on usage, the presence of spam and questionable GPTs poses a significant threat to the platform’s reputation and legal standing. The company’s emulation of the App Store model could lead to various legal disputes with content owners and regulatory authorities.

Despite the initial vision of the GPT Store as a curated collection of innovative AI tools, the current state of the marketplace highlights the need for immediate action to address spam and maintain compliance with copyright and ethical standards. The future of the GPT Store hinges on OpenAI’s ability to enact effective cleanup measures and enhance the platform’s moderation processes.
